How Snow Can Damage Your Lawn

As your greenery slowly disappears underneath a blanket of snow during the winter, it can be easy to forget about. However, it’s important to take care of your landscape before winter arrives so that it can flourish and save you time and money trying to revive it come springtime.

During the winter greenery generally becomes dormant and slows growing dramatically. Also, if your landscape has a lot of snow cover throughout the winter, you could be dealing with snow mold in the springtime. Because your lawn is constantly wet from snow cover, your soil will retain a lot of moisture, becoming the perfect breeding grounds for fungus. This snow  mold fungus won’t kill your grass, but can seriously damage it’s appearance. To avoid serious snow mold damage, it is important to continue mowing your lawn in the fall until it stops growing, as longer stems and a fuller lawn create better conditions for diseases in the winter by blocking airflow to the soil.

Working on your landscape before the weather turns cold can save you money on upkeep costs come springtime. Having your leaves raked, debris cleaned, lawn weeded and fertilized before the snow falls can clear up space for your yard to receive sunshine and to help give your lawn the nutrients it needs to survive the cold weather. It is also important to prevent too much foot traffic on grassy areas during the winter. Although grasses are fairly hardy, it can be hard for them to revive in the spring if a footpath has been worn into the ground.
